Rob Barber’s Bodyboarding School has recently enjoyed some great waves for their coaching weekends held in Newquay in Cornwall and Bundoran in Ireland in the last month.
Even though the waves have been fairly lacklustre through spring and early summer, each weekend has been very fortunate – there has been just the right amount of swell (two-to-three foot) for the pupils on the courses to make some huge improvements.
Newquay
On June 2-5 the Newquay mini-break saw some great performances from the participants, with stand outs being Darren Cocks from Plymouth and Liz Culprit from Banbury. Darren has been bodyboarding for some years but wanted to take his riding up to the next level in preparation for the trip to Morocco that he has booked with the bodyboard school in November. With sessions at both Fistral and Newquay Bay Darren perfected his spins and rolls and improved his wave selection.
Darren commented:“Had a fantastic weekend, great coaching, friendly staff, chilled out environment, video analysis was excellent for seeing how I need to improve my skills. Good value for money, and can’t wait for the next one I’ve booked for September”.
Liz was sent on the long weekend by her boyfriend Owen Harris who, a keen bodyboarder himself- was fed up of leaving Liz in the van as a ‘boogie-widow’. Liz over came her fear of going out of her depth and by the second session was catching unbroken waves and trimming. Liz now has the confidence to travel with Owen to Costa Rica this winter as they have both booked a coaching holiday bodyboard school.
Liz commented:
“Loved the weekend! Really needed to build up my confidence in the water and did exactly that with the friendly, excellent coaching. Definitely coming back for more!!”
Ireland
The annual coaching trip to Bundoran went down in style. Riders travelled from Cornwall, Bournemouth and Bristol in the UK to take part. They were met by Irish residents from Belfast, Dublin and Sligo. The mini-break saw an incredible array of conditions, with howling onshore storm surf, 2 foot perfectly clean waves basked in scorching sun and everything in between. It was great to see the crew deal with the mixed bag of conditions so well. Jo Eades, a Business Consultant from Bristol, had only been bodyboarding for 2 weeks but by the end of the break was surfing green waves at Easky Left and other more secret reef breaks and showed some fantastic improvements.
Jo commented “It would have been easy to let the cold and conditions put me off, but figured you don’t learn much on the shore – you’ve just got to get wet. Sure enough, waves better than they looked and great to be able to put Rob’s coaching into practice and surf with some great company”.
Keen to try out a coaching weekend but not sure what to expect? Here is a little vid clip from our coaching weekend earlier this year with ‘Team Taf’ a gang of hardy shredders from the Llangennith area.
